"I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for."

Dioxazine Purple

Picture
Dioxazine Purple (I use Liquitex Heavy Body Professional Acrylic Paint) is one of my most favourite colors!  I painted the background with this wonderful color and added white infinity swirls in the background. The red and yellow tulips, cobalt teal vase and the yellow-green pear were all drawn from my imagination.

I had this painting hanging at a local gallery for their 'People's Choice Show' back in February this year.

My process is to draw out the idea I've imagined using a watercolor pencil. If I need to make a correction I can just wet a q-tip and dip it in water and wipe the area out easily with no smudging and then wait for it to dry.
When I begin to paint, I mix the acrylic paint colors with water to the consistency of watercolour paint for the first layer and start painting. I continue to add layers of thinned out paint, making sure to let the paint dry between coats.

Many thin coats of paint later, I get ready for nearing the end of the painting with a paint color mixture of each of the colors I've used by using an acrylic glazing medium. In this case, I used a medium glossy glazing medium. The way I mixed it is by combining glazing medium and water at a 1:1 (one to one ratio) and make sure there is about 35% acrylic paint. For example,  mix 1/2 teaspoon water + 1/2 teaspoon glazing medium and about just over a 1/4 teaspoon or more of acrylic color. I also want this mixture to be the consistency of watercolour paint. This adds a nice sheen to the finished painting. Sometimes I add an extra layer using only the glazing medium and water mixture for the final coat all over the painting.
